Cooking Healthy Foods Does Not Need To Be Costly

Cooking healthy foods is a must for every mother. A mom needs to ensure that her family is eating healthy foods and cooking it herself is one of the ways to do this. Sometimes, however, her goal to keep the family healthy is compromised because of inadequate budget. There are some food supplies and ingredients that are indeed nutritious, but are dear in terms of costs. Below are some tips to apply if you want to cook and ready to eat healthily without spending excessively.

Planning
Cooking healthy foods should not necessarily cause a hole in your wallet. All you need is to make plans ahead of time. Prior to grocery shopping, list down all items you need to buy. To know what you should purchase, you should already prepare your menu for the week or two. Buy food supplies that could last 1-2 weeks to save both money and time. Stick to your list so you can avoid impulse buying.

Stocking
Ensure that your pantry is always well-stocked. The products you must store in your pantry should be useful in whipping any nutritious quick meal in case you were not able to buy groceries.

Bulk Buying
This also applies on other items sold in the market. It saves money when you buy an item in bulk such as grains, nuts and other dry goods. However, you should know how to properly store your bulk foods to prevent them from getting spoiled.

Substitution
When a commodity is expensive, it does not mean it is the best. Suppose you have this favorite brand of canned soup, but is costlier than the store brands. You can always try and substitute the cheaper store brand for your favorite, but more expensive brand. You will be surprised to know that the tastes of the two do not have that much difference.

In-Season Eating
You can also save money by buying and eating foods that are in season. What you must do is to familiarize yourself with the vegetables and fruits that are abundant in every season or month. This way, you can plan your meals ahead using those in-season produce.

Good Quality Investment
There are a few quality items that you should also consider investing in. These are healthy products that can be used sparingly such as olive oil and dark chocolate. These items usually cost more because they are processed better than the others and are packed with healthier contents.

Fresh Flavorings
Use fresh or dried flavorings like spices and herbs. These seasonings add more flavor to foods without adding more calories. Substitute fancy oil ingredients with fresh variants.

Bulk Cooking
Try to cook more than one batch of a meal. This way, you only need to prepare and cook the meal once, but be able to eat it many times. If you easily get bored of the same meal, you simply store the leftover portions in tight-covered containers and place it inside a freezer.

Recycle
To recycle foods is to be able to whip up leftover portions into new and exciting dishes. Suppose you have leftover roast beef. What you can do is to slice the beef thinly or chop it. Add some lettuce leaves with low-fat mayonnaise to make your packed sandwich lunch for school or work.
